UK councils manage 300,000 hectares of amenity space not including golf courses and woodlands. These green spaces can act as huge carbon storage sinks and a resource that is currently not exploited.
Better open space management increases the rate at which CO2 is removed from the atmosphere and converted into plant biomass and soil organic matter (SOM). This in turn raises the opportunity for long-term carbon storage in Soil Organic Carbon (SOC), which in its turn increases biomass and enhances soil fertility and improves soil drainage, all of which lower atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) concentrations.
Improving soil health can be complimented by growing specialist grasses with the propensity to sequester many times more carbon than conventional amenity grasses through improved rooting structures.
These grasses are also hardy and slow growing and reduce the need for frequent cutting which equates to lower maintenance costs and reduced carbon emissions from maintenance machinery.
Green Pigeon are working with several companies in the anaerobic digestion industry. The waste product from the anaerobic digestion process is being dried and prilled to produce a fertiliser containing macro nutrients and high levels of organic matter that is totally recycled and provides a carbon zero alternative to fossil fuel fertilisers.
These materials and products are being utilised as part of the soil health strategy delivered by Green Pigeon.
You can’t manage what you can’t measure, Green Pigeon offer a full suite of measurement services including soil nutrient status, soil carbon and plant health.
Measuring soil organic carbon prior to improvement schemes and measuring the result after allows councils to use this data for carbon offsetting or even carbon crediting.
Green Pigeon will aim to achieve at least a 30% increase in soil organic carbon within 18 months and at a £80 to £100 per tonne for carbon credits.
Unlike many decarbonisation consultancies who specialise on the built environment, Green Pigeon focuses on the outdoor environment; our expertise encompasses various aspects of environmental management, from decarbonising key maintenance operations, enhancing soil and water management to planning and improving community spaces. We are committed to helping councils achieve their net zero emissions goals through comprehensive carbon assessments, strategic planning, and the implementation of effective reduction and sequestering measures. Our experienced team brings a wealth of knowledge and practical experience to every project, ensuring that we deliver impactful and sustainable results for our clients.
Green Pigeon specialises in conducting detailed quantitative assessments of our clients' open space assets to determine their carbon contributions. We identify opportunities for reducing carbon footprints through the implementation of sustainable alternative management processes. Our aim is to provide councils with actionable insights and strategies that facilitate significant reductions in emissions, aligning with their net zero objectives.
We undertake detailed quantitative assessments of your assets' carbon contributions. From carbon emissions from you maintenance strategies to assessing soil organic carbon.
We provide a detailed strategy for reducing your carbon footprint through sustainable alternatives, as well as increasing the potential of your open spaces to become effective carbon storage sinks with soil and agronomic management.
We assist in the implementation of carbon reduction strategies and measure the benefits to ensure tangible results. We explore how transitioning to sustainable technologies and practices can reduce carbon emissions and enhance the environment
We provide solutions for effective flooding and water management. Improving soil health and quality can improve drainage and increase soil organic carbon levels, this in turn improves drainage and becomes a positive cycle.
Our expertise ensures the improvement of soil and plant health, crucial for the maintenance of parks and play areas

“The world’s soils capture more carbon than biomass and the atmosphere combined.
Increasing the soils’ ability to store carbon could have a big impact on climate change.
Scientists say improving soil health could lead to an extra 2 billion tonnes of CO2 being sequestered by 2030”.
